Editions of the techexplorer Hypermedia Browser

Please note that the Professional Edition of the Integre techexplorer Hypermedia Browser is now available for free download from the techexplorer web site, and that the Introductory Edition is no longer being offered as a separate edition of techexplorer.

This section describes the differences between these editions as they existed in previous versions of techexplorer, so as to provide context for references contained in the remainder of the documentation.

The two editions of the Integre techexplorer Hypermedia Browser are:

The Introductory Edition
The Professional Edition

The Introductory Edition

The Introductory Edition is a viewer for a large subset of TeX, LaTeX, and AMS-LaTeX, as well as for MathML, the Mathematical Markup Language.

The particular features that techexplorer supports for each of these markup languages are described in the Compatibility section. The Creating documents section describes the basic document structure and the new features that techexplorer adds for electronic interactive publication of scientific and technical documents.

The basic features provided by the Introductory Edition include:

A large subset of TeX and LaTeX.

Full support for MathML 1.0, 1.01 and 2.0, both Presentation Tags and Content Tags.

Hypertext links to any other documents on the web, including other techexplorer documents. These same links can be used to invoke JavaScript code in your web browser.
Support for displaying GIF and JPEG images (the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh versions can display additional image formats).

- Play audio WAV files (on Microsoft Windows and Macintosh only, the Macintosh includes additional formats).
- Play video AVI files (on Microsoft Windows and Macintosh only, the Macintosh includes additional formats).
- Alternate between two text displays. vs.
- Start applications on your computer.
- Display dialog boxes to retrieve information from the reader.
Author-defined pop-up menus containing arbitrary links.
Hierarchical document navigational aids.
Fully formatted pop-up windows for footnotes and author-defined "pop-up" links.
Author-defined use of color and background images.

The Professional Edition

The Professional Edition includes all the features of the Introductory Edition and adds:

An ActiveX Control version for improved integration with Internet Explorer and other applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
Full support for Internet Explorer Behaviors including Document Object Model scripting.
Connectivity to Mathematica for creating web documents with "live" math.
A scripting interface for developers who wish to programmatically control techexplorer using Java or JavaScript from Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.
An add-in interface for authors who want to interactively send information to other applications.
Support for the Document Object Model (DOM) Level 1 API via the scripting and add-in interface.
Printing of full documents displayed by techexplorer.
Searching, with all matches selected.
A set of fonts with the complete set of symbols needed by basic TeX and LaTeX, plus the AMS Symbol set.
Inline video.
Autoplay audio.
