  techexplorer Release Notes
Interactions with Norton AntiVirus

Older versions of the techexplorer installation program used Windows Scripting to create registry entries needed for the proper operation of the techexplorer ActiveX control and its associated signed Java archives.

The installation program for techexplorer Release 3.5 and later no longer uses Windows Scripting to create registry entries, and so should not cause Norton AntiVirus to believe it has detected a malicious script. You may still see this warning when installing or uninstalling older versions of techexplorer.

Closing techexplorer windows in Internet Explorer

Using older versions of the techexplorer ActiveX control within Internet Explorer, an error message may appear when closing a second instance of the Internet Explorer window. This error message is the result of a Windows message being sent to the techexplorer window after Internet Explorer has already unloaded the ActiveX control.

This error message has been fixed in techexplorer Release 3.5 and should no longer appear.

Support for Mozilla Versions

The installation program for techexplorer Release 3.5 now includes support for installing the techexplorer plugin in the Mozilla plugins directory.

Note that the Linux version of techexplorer is supported for Netscape version 6.0 and higher, and for Mozilla version 1.6 and higher. Specifically, the version of Mozilla that ships with RedHat Linux 9 is not compatible with techexplorer, and you will need to upgrade your Mozilla version to 1.6 or higher to use techexplorer with Mozilla.

Scripting Issues

If you have used the techexplorer Java classes from earlier versions to work within or along side Java applets, you will need to modify and recompile those classes using the new integre.* packages rather than the old ibm.* packages.

Some of the algorithms discussed in the documentation for exposing techexplorer APIs to Java classes are incompatible with the Sun Java Plugin and the <applet> tag. Fortunately, there are workarounds outlined in the documentation if Sun's Plugin is a requirement for your project. See the section on "Scripting" for descriptions of both algorithms.

Finally, the Netscape plugin model has changed significantly since the release of techexplorer version 3.1. Because LiveConnect is no longer supported in Netscape versions 6.1 and later, dynamic scripting of techexplorer will not work in these versions at present. We will be making the necessary changes to techexplorer so that scripting will be available in these and subsequent versions of Netscape and Mozilla.

Uninstalling Earlier Versions

When uninstalling earlier (non-Integre) versions of techexplorer on Windows, there may be a flaw in the uninstall script that deletes a branch from your Windows registry. Before uninstalling, run regedit and export the following registry branch to your desktop:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type

Now uninstall the old version of techexplorer and check the registry. If you notice the contents of the above registry key are now missing, you can import the file that you just created to restore the registry. These registry entries control how Internet Explorer handles the rendering of different filetypes (PNG, XML, etc). Without them, Internet Explorer will only know how to display basic filetypes such as HTML, JPG and GIF. After restoring the registry, you may install the latest version of techexplorer, in which this issue has been corrected.
